KITCHEN GARDEN '98-99
The 93 organizations supported in the program involved over four thousand Roma and non-Roma families in the cultivation of kitchen gardens. Support for tools, fertilizers and farming techniques, which had not been used before, increased local capacities for successful gardening. The vegetables and fruits they produced substantially improved the living conditions of the participating families.
SCHOOL GARDEN
In 1999 we assisted 39 elementary schools operating in disadvantaged settlements in the cultivation of their school gardens. Within the program, the mostly Roma students of these schools were given an opportunity to learn the basic skills of gardening.
GARDENING 2000
This is an advanced stage of the kitchen garden projects that were successfully implemented in 1998-1999. Gardening 2000 aims to support further the development of vegetable growing projects of Roma non-governmental organizations. Application is limited to organizations which have successfully participated in the programs of Autonómia or any other grant-giving foundations operating in a similar field over the past three years. At the end of the two-year program, the participants will be able to farm as independent producers.
